Canteen Operator
Overview
The Canteen Operator will support the day-to-day operations of the canteen by preparing and serving food, processing customer purchases, and maintaining cleanliness and organization within the kitchen and serving areas. This role requires an individual who can enhance customer experience through innovative ideas and contribute to the overall efficiency of canteen operations.
Requirements
- Grade 12 / Matric
- Previous experience in a canteen, food service, or hospitality environment (preferred)
- Basic knowledge of food preparation and hygiene standards
- Ability to handle cash/card transactions accurately and responsibly
- Good communication and customer service skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Reliability, punctuality, and strong work ethic
- Willingness to perform hands-on operational tasks (including cleaning and setup)
- Basic numeracy and stock handling skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks
Responsibilities
- Prepare and serve food and beverages in line with hygiene and quality standards
- Assist with daily canteen operations, including opening, closing, and general setup/pack-down
- Handle customer purchases, including processing cash and/or card transactions accurately
- Maintain cleanliness and organisation of the kitchen, serving areas, and storage spaces
- Monitor stock levels and assist with ordering and receiving of supplies
- Ensure compliance with food safety, health, and hygiene regulations at all times
- Support menu planning and contribute ideas for new or improved food offerings
- Assist in managing daily inventory and reducing food waste
- Provide friendly and efficient customer service to all staff and visitors
- Report maintenance issues, stock shortages, or operational concerns to management
- Assist with ad hoc operational tasks as required to ensure smooth canteen functioning
