Job Description:
The Mine Health and Safety Act requires the Occupational Health Nurse to deliver and maintain an efficient occupational health service and job/person specification-based medical surveillance program.
Minimum Requirements:
- Grade 12 qualification or equivalent
- Degree or National Diploma in Occupational Health obtained from an accredited institution
- At least 4 years’ experience in Occupational Health in the mining or manufacturing industry
- Professional Registration with the Nursing Council and SASOHN
- Extensive knowledge of health management systems as well as the Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Power Point)
- Be medically fit for the position and environment as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre, as well as pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test and any other tests required to determine the applicant’s suitability for employment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Promote the health, safety, and welfare of the mine’s workforce at all levels by conducting fitness tests based on standard procedures and protocols to determine continuation in current occupation, possible job changes, and/or restrictions.
- Execute daily routine and non-routine work in accordance with Occupational Health Policies and Procedures, e.g., medical surveillance procedure; screening procedure; pre-placement procedure, and so on.
- Ensure that all Occupational Health practices are followed in order to assist the operation in meeting its Occupational Health objectives and goals.
- In cases where medical ailments are detected through screening and/or surveillance procedures, refer the client to a medical practitioner.
- Encourage targeted medical treatment and conduct accurate and dependable Occupational Health tests
- Draft reports and ensure that training records, accidents/incidents, inspection reports/case registers, and Health, Safety, and Environmental policies, standards, and procedures are properly stored.
