Overview

Accompany walking patients and transport sitting/non-walking patients per wheelchair or stretcher between wards and treatment areas. Assist with the transfer of patients to beds/trolleys and vice versa. Safe transporting of patients in and out of vehicles. Respond to requests from wards, pharmacy or other departments regarding medical equipment or documentation. Carry medical and other documentation (patient files, reports, etc.) to wards/treatment and other admin areas. Change or assist in changing oxygen supply during patient transport when required. Deliver specimens to laboratories and ensure a safe and hygienic work environment. Ensure laboratory specimens and blood products are delivered within required timeframes and safety protocols.

Requirements

  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills
  • Appropriate experience as a porter in a health environment
  • Willingness to rotate within the wards and other departments when necessary
  • Must be physically fit
  • Ability to handle and lift heavy objects
  • Prepared to handle corpses (deceased bodies)
  • Good communication skills
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of infection prevention methods
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • Ability to work under pressure
